Foxes Curriculum Letter Autumn Term 1 

We had a fantastic start to the new school year yesterday and I already know it’s going to be a fabulous year. The dragon fruit tasting was a big hit and many of the children took seeds home to plant. I’d be really interested if any of you have any success with them.

English

In English this term we will be writing non-chronological reports along with diary entries and fact files. Our writing will be inspired by the book ‘Redwoods’ and our learning will take us outside on many occasions looking at nature, trees and habitats. As always, we’ll be focussing on developing our handwriting and independently uses spellings from our spelling lessons. Our reading book this term is ‘The Boy Who Grew Dragons’ and we have many predictions and hopes for the story already.

Maths

In Maths we are focussing on place value to begin with and then moving to addition and subtraction of larger numbers. We will be looking at the meaning of the times symbol and how multiplication links to repeated addition. Children will be encouraged to practice their times tables at home as well as in class.

Religious Education

We will be developing an understanding of what is religion and what is spirituality. We will look at art, buildings and interviews with people to develop a range of questions that help us understand why people live their lives in certain ways. We will reflect on what is important to us and what makes us feel good.

Science

In science we will study sound. How the human ear receives sound, how sound is linked to vibrations and what sound waves look like. We have lots of practical lessons to help us understand this.

P.E

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday, children require a water bottle and PE kit on these days. Please check the uniform policy to clarify uniform expectations. We will be enjoying basketball and hockey.

Geography

Our geography topic is the UK and beyond. We will learn about counties and our neighbouring counties, what a county town is, what a major city is and where the capital cities are across Europe.

French

We will develop our skills of introducing ourselves and say how we feel as well as having a wider appreciation of where French is spoken in the world.

Art

We will begin our term with a study of Emma Yarlett, she is an Illustrator and Typographer and the producer of the biggest art piece we have in school.

We will look at the books she has produced as well as the Big Story of Christianity and develop our drawing skills by designing our own character.
