Explanation of Free School Meals Eligibility

Dear Parents/Carers,

There seems to be some confusion amongst you regarding which children are entitled to the ‘free school meals’ vouchers which are being issued by the government during the current school closures.

In England there are two schemes running which help parents/carers with school meals.

Details regarding the two schemes are as follows:

Name of scheme:

Universal Free School Meal Scheme

Free School Meal scheme

Who is eligible:

Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is eligible.

Only children of primary school age whose parents/carers apply for Free School Meal status because of their financial circumstances.

Is my child entitled to a free school meal voucher during the school closure?

No – unless your child also qualifies because of your financial circumstances.

Children who are currently getting a free school meal for this reason will be entitled to get a free school meal voucher.

At Friskney School…

Every child in Red and Yellow Classes.

Only children whose parents/carers qualify due to their financial circumstances and they have already applied and been accepted for the free school meal scheme.

Example which might help…

Prince George and Princess Charlotte are entitled to a universal free school meal because they are the right ages.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte would not qualify for a free school meal voucher because their parents earn (have) a lot of money!

I hope the above helps explain who can get the free school vouchers. Presently at our school we have only 17 children whose parents have previously applied and been accepted on the free school meals scheme and so are now entitled to free school meal vouchers during the school closure. If you think your child may qualify due to your financial circumstances, please see the advice below on how to apply.

All children whilst they are in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are eligible for a free school meal under the government's "Universal Free School Meal Scheme".  This does not mean that they are automatically eligible for "Free School Meals" status which is dependent upon the benefits parents do or do not receive.  An application for each individual child needs to be made by parents (not school) either on-line by visiting the free school meal website or by telephoning the Lincolnshire County Council Customer Services Centre on 01522 782030.  The information you provide will be used to check if you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit and, if you are on Universal Credit, your earnings will be assessed from up to three months of your last Universal Credit assessment periods.  If you are eligible for "Free School Meals" status please bring confirmation in to the school.
